BWE #1 – WvW Impressions

May 7th, 2012 | Posted by Redean in Guild Wars 2

So WvW was a lot of fun! I really enjoyed it and as a mainly PvE player I see myself spending a lot of time playing the format. I joined up with a few friends which made it that much better, I think playing WvW by yourself will get old very fast as it will be very hard to assault any points and you can even get overwhelmed by roaming mobs (at least wearing level 5 gear). Basically with my group of friends we ended up employing hit and run tactics. We spent a lot of time roaming the map looking for any lone players to gank or lightly defended objectives we could cap. From my experience it felt that 3 things were vital to victory: Mass co-ordination, mobility and SUPPLY!  If you didn’t have your server backing you for those big keep sieges you were doomed to fail. I also found the ability to quickly move around the map very helpful in providing a good offence and defence. Lastly without supply you will fail, mark my words. You need supply to keep your walls and doors up and to build defences and you need supply to build siege weapons which is a helluva lot more effective than trying to bash down a door with no support.

I had the pleasure of being able to erect a trebuchet and then use it bring down a keep wall, initiating a server attack on that keep (walls are very hard to get back up you see). Siege weapons are rather difficult to control and to get used to the range as you have to charge up shots to determine the range of the shot rather than simply ground targeting but once you do get used to it, it should provide no issues. It is worth noting that a trebuchet was able to destroy a keep wall significantly faster than 15 people wailing on a door, use this information as you see fit.

On to the elementalist side of things I found the staff very useful for point defence with all its ground targets and longer range (you’ll need that range to attack from walls) and also fairly good at providing group mobility while I found Dagger/Dagger great for attacking single targets or assaulting un-walled points like Supply Camps, Dagger/Dagger  also provides a very large amount of solo mobility which can be helpful for ferrying supply to construction sites. I opted to bring the Conjure Frost skill as it was extremely helpful for keep defence and provided a lot of control over opponents. The Frost bow has the range to attack off keep walls (if you have some melee friends this a great skill to bring so they can help with keep defence) and is very effective at slowing or even immobilizing enemies in quick succession.

Lastly I really enjoyed WvW because it packs more than just large-scale PvP. My group stumbled upon a storm temple which when captured would grant us a weather machine to wreck havoc with. We valiantly tried to stave off the krait swarming the area but they proved too much for us to handle. I eagerly await the day I gain control of the weather machine, until then I can only imagine.
